Greenhouse Gases
Theme coordinator: Peter Rayner, LSCE, F
The mission of this sub-project is to develop the first operational system to monitor the concentrations of greenhouse gases, and their associated surface sources and sinks, and to attribute these sources and sinks to controlling processes.
Global Reactive Gases
Theme coordinator: Martin Schultz, FZ Jülich, D
The overall purpose of this theme is to provide the component for chemically reactive gases based on coupling meteorological and chemical-transport models. Validation and improvement of the performance of the coupled models and global production system is a key activity.
Aerosols
Theme coordinator: Olivier Boucher, MetOffice, UK
The aerosol component is developed in this theme. The task includes incorporation of an aerosol scheme in the ECMWF model, provision of elements of the data assimilation, and assessment and refinement of the performance of the model and data analysis.
Production
Theme coordinator: Adrian Simmons, ECMWF, UK
This theme completes the integration within ECMWF's global weather forecasting system of the components developed under the GHG, GRG and AER themes, with emphasis on development of the data assimilation. The system is run to provide daily analyses and forecasts, and retrospective analyses for the years 2003-2007.
Regional Air Quality
Theme coordinator: Vincent-Henri Peuch, Meteo France, F
The Regional Air Quality theme has as its focus the production of regional forecasts of chemical species and air quality indices based on an ensemble of air-quality models on the European scale.
Validation
Theme coordinator: Henk Eskes, KNMI, NL
A concerted, cross-theme validation of the integrated GEMS system is being undertaken in the final year of the project, building on the tools and experience gained within other themes. One important emphasis is on assessment of the way model and measurement biases have been controlled to avoid unphysical feedbacks.
